Storyboard of a Music Video (Florence and the Machine - Breath of Life)

Genre

The genre that my chosen song falls within is Indie Rock.
Indie Rock originated from the United Kingdom and the United States of America during the 1980's but didn't become mainstream in the UK until the late 1990's.

Indie Rock started out in the UK as Indie Pop during the 80's with bands such as New Order developing it through techno and house music.
The Rock scene broke through into the mainstream audience during the 90's with bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but by the end of the 90's the rock and indie pop sound had come together.

Coldplay is a Indie Rock band who came together during the late 90's.

Blur are a successful Indie Rock band who rose to the mainstream producing Indie Pop music, but soon developed into Indie Rock during the late 90's and early 00's as a result of the rivalry with also successful Alternative Rock band Oasis.

About my chosen Song and Artist

The song 'Never Let Me Go' is made from mostly drums and piano, with the backing vocals of the main singer repeating 'Never Let Me Go' throughout the chorus during the song. The song is made from ballad and also indie pop mixed to give it a more dramatic effect and a unique genre in itself. This is a common genre for the band, as in their first single of their second album 'What The Water Gave Me' it includes these elements. The ballad and indie pop mix has become a trademark for Florence and the Machine throughout their second album 'Ceremonials'.

However, when their first album was released 'Lungs', their trademark was mainly pop rock with songs like 'Kiss With a Fist' and 'Dog Days Are Over'. It was when their highly successful single 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)' was released that Florence and the Machine started to get their ballad signature style and then with the release of their other singles this style started to develop into their trademark style, with songs such as 'Howl' and 'Cosmic Love'.

With the release of their second album 'Ceremonials' Florence and the Machines song were now more ballad based with modern techno pop. An example of this would be their single 'Breath Of Life' which has a majority of ballad vocals and orchestra symphony backing music with modern hip hop beats. This created the song which was used in the 2012 film release 'Snow White and the Huntsman'. As they used in 'Never Let Me Go' they have, in the chorus, repeated the words to give a more dramatic effect.

In their most recent release 'Spectrum' Florence and the Machine have again used their ballad and indie pop mix to create an old fashioned yet modern song and also they have used the technique of repeating during the chorus. This shows the recurring theme of the band which has been developed through their singles and albums.

The video's of the songs tend to reflect the personality of Florence Welch, the singer. She's known to be different and have her own type of style, musically and fashion wise as well. So in her music videos they will be mad and quirky idea's. In the music video 'Kiss With A Fist' Welch is seen to be wearing flowery and bright clothes and also hugging and holding colourful flowers, this can reflect and connote that Welch is bright and girly, also, it could signify that Welch can be a rebel with her black and cream rock style stripped tights which could interlink with the title of the song; 'Kiss With A Fist' indicating that Welch may be a harmless girl but has an edgy side to her.

In 'What The Water Gave Me' the first shot is of Welch's hand which shows a tattoo reflected, and the opening sequence shows Welch more relaxed, and also to have changed her style, to more mature clothing i.e. more fashionable clothing. This could connote and signify that along with the music growing the band has also and with that developed their own style, not in just their music but in their appearance and look. However, during the sequence when Welch in seen wearing a white dress she is seen moving around like she did in the 'Kiss With A Fist' video indicating that she may have changed her style but she's still the Florence from their first album.
